5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CREATIVE WRITING SKILLS

Writing has never been more lucrative than now. How do you feel when you read one of your favourite authors or any intriguing content that keeps your eyes glued to the pages? Good, right? It is often a wonderful time to have a cup of juice or coffee beside you as you read.

As a writer, you wield great influence over your audience with your use of words. But it’s not just about writing or being called a writer — you have to hone your skills. You can’t afford to publish content without a touch of skillfulness on them.

Here are five tips to set you on the path towards being a wonderful writer:

  1. READ! READ! READ! Reading and writing go hand in hand. If you want to be a well-groomed writer, you have to be a voracious reader. Writers are readers. Read and study books written by great writers. As a writer, you should read with intentionality, especially if you are aiming to improve your creative writing skills. Read in-between the lines; notice the writing style. Take note of what interests you or catches your attention and in no time, you’ll notice your writing becoming better. 
  1. Practise: The saying ‘Practice makes perfect’ is not a cliche; it’s the truth. Writing is beyond putting words on paper; it’s a skill that requires constant practice. You can only get better at writing by writing. Writing consistently is like building your creative muscles. A man who wants to build his muscles doesn’t see results after being to the gym once. He has to do it consistently. Likewise, you have to write consistently to become better.

Writing isn’t exactly easy. It is with practice that you increase your proficiency in it. 

  1. Pay attention to grammar rules: You don’t want to put your readers off when they read your book. Imagine how you’d feel if you picked up a book and saw grammatical errors, misspelt words, or misuse of phrases. As a writer, you should pay attention to grammatical rules. You can never tell how far your write-ups will go. You wouldn’t want to miss out on opportunities just because you failed to pay your dues in following grammatical rules. 
  1. Revise your writing: This is a follow-up to the previous point. Writing is just the foundation of your work; editing is what builds it up to a masterpiece. Emma Hill said,  ‘The first draft is black and white. Editing gives the story color.’ The beauty of your work as a writer emerges when it is properly and finely edited.

Remove unnecessary adverbs, cliches, and long sentences. Also, make sure to keep your writing as simple as possible. This is a rule every writer must adhere to. You’re writing to pass across information, not to impress. Your readers should be able to understand what you are saying without much ado. 

  1. Take writing courses: No man is an island of knowledge. If you want to grow, you must be willing to pay the price.
